Manchester City beats Wolverhampton 2-1 in stoppage time

London. Manchester City defeated Wolverhampton 2-1 this Sunday with a goal from defender John Stones in the final seconds of added time, to provisionally take the lead minutes before Liverpool-Chelsea, the star match of matchday eight of the Premier League.

The current English champion managed to beat the hosts thanks to a corner kick taken by Stones (90+5), who also scored in the final stretch of the match against Arsenal (2-2) in September.

The English defender’s goal had to be examined for long minutes by the VAR, since it could be interpreted that his teammate Bernardo Silva was bothering goalkeeper Jose Sá in the action, but the referee did not see anything punishable.

This sixth victory in eight games places the Citizens in the provisional lead with 20 points, ahead of Liverpool (2nd, 18 points) who host Chelsea (3:30 p.m. GMT) and Arsenal (3rd, 17 points), which fell 2-0 on Saturday in Bournemouth.

Despite the victory, the visit to the West Midlands has confirmed the permeability of City’s defense this season. The Norwegian attacker Jorgen Strand-Larsen (7) opened the scoring thanks to a great ball delivery from the Wolves, despite the visitors’ pressure.

The tie came thanks to a shot by Croatian defender Josko Gvardiol from outside the area (33).

Manchester City extended their unbeaten streak in the championship to 31 games (25 wins and 6 draws), while Wolverhampton, 19th ranked with only 1 point, suffered their fifth consecutive defeat.

Liverpool beat Chelsea (2-1) this Sunday on matchday eight of the Premier League to stay ahead of City in the English league.

Arne Slot’s men had a tough test, despite it being at Anfield, after the national team break and against a Chelsea team in great dynamics with Enzo Maresca. In the return of the Premier two weeks later, Liverpool extended their streak to remain at the top of the table, with 21 points.

Mohamed Salah put the hosts ahead from the penalty spot and Nicolas Jackson, with the suspense of a VAR review for possible offside, made it 1-1 at the start of the second half. Liverpool reacted immediately with Curtis Jones making it 2-1 and the three points remained with the leader at Anfield.
