Management Challenges of Cow Dung Waste in South Jakarta

Jakarta

Although the sample test results cow dung waste from the farm in Pancoran South Jakarta it hasn’t come out yet, but Perumda Paljaya can predict the results. The characteristics of cow dung are ‘more serious’ than the characteristics of human dung. Paljaya, who usually handles septic tanks for human waste, suggested that the farm make another type of septic tank that is more suitable for cow dung.

“BOD (biological oxygen demand) and COD (chemical oxygen demand) for cow manure are very high, and special management is needed for cow manure,” said Perumda Paljaya Main Director, Aris Supriyanto when contacted, Tuesday (27/6/2023).

The BOD and COD from cattle ranch waste is actually being investigated by Paljaya, a DKI company for wastewater treatment. Indeed, initially, Paljaya wanted to help explore potential solutions to this environmental problem, namely to try to find out whether the biopal type septic tanks that Paljaya usually builds could be suitable for cow dung or not.

Biopal Paljaya is usually built for human waste, not cow manure. Biopal is a watertight septic tank that can treat fecal waste so it doesn’t pollute the environment. It is predicted that Paljaya’s biopal will not be suitable for cattle farming like that owned by a resident named Burhan in the Cikoko Village, Pancoran, South Jakarta.

“So our advice is that it should be managed directly there, in livestock there must be collecting (waste collection), then processed there as well. There is actually special management to manage cow dung so it cannot be managed in an WWTP (Wastewater Treatment Plant). ) has Paljaya,” said Aris Supriyanto.

He had an idea, use the cow manure as biogas. Precisely in this way, cow dung waste can be useful for local residents, for example for their daily cooking fire needs.

“That gas can be used as fuel,” he said.

What is clear is that cow manure should not be channeled into drainage that flows into residential area sewers as currently exists. Apart from that, Paljaya himself admits that actually this is not a problem that is usually the object of his work. According to him, this is the domain of the DKI Jakarta Province Food Security, Maritime Affairs and Agriculture Service (DKPKP).

“Actually, Paljaya in terms of cow dung is not within our authority. It is not our domain. It’s just that the Cikoko Village Head asked for help yesterday. We have said that it cannot be done in the WWTP we have,” he said.
