“Man with Schizophrenia Nearly Beats Partner to Death: Shocking Details Revealed in Hamburg Court”

A man enters into a relationship, moves in with the woman and nearly beats her to death. A daughter hears her mother’s screams at night and saves her. The Hamburg district court has now admitted the 41-year-old to a clinic – and reveals a shocking history of the crime.

A man abuses his partner with heavy punches in an apartment in Hamburg-Lurup. The woman’s screams wake her daughter. The twelve-year-old comes into the kitchen and sees her mother falling unconscious. In the morning, the child confides in his teachers at school, thereby saving his mother’s life.

Hamburg-Lurup: man (41) injured partner several times

The regional court referred the woman’s partner to a psychiatric clinic on Wednesday. At the same time, the criminal court acquitted the accused of incapacity from the charge of attempted manslaughter and dangerous bodily harm.

The 41-year-old is not a criminal, but mentally ill, emphasizes the presiding judge Matthias Steinmann. The defendant suffers from paranoid hallucinatory schizophrenia. He was also under the influence of alcohol and cocaine at the time.

According to the court, on November 1, 2022, the man hit his girlfriend on the head with a salt and pepper shaker in her apartment, causing her to bruise and bleed. On the night of November 3, he abused her again, this time by punching her in the head. The screams of the woman woke the twelve-year-old daughter and came into the kitchen.

She watched as the defendant stuffed a sponge into the mother’s mouth to stop her from screaming. The 40-year-old fell unconscious. The officers, alerted by the teachers, broke into the apartment and found the accused sleeping on the kitchen floor – next to his critically injured partner.

Woman barely survives attacks by the 41-year-old

The police officers initially believed they had found two bodies, as one of them testified as a witness. Only when his colleague pulled away a blanket that was lying over the two did they realize that they were still alive. The judge said the woman suffered severe head injuries from the powerful punches, including a fractured skull and cerebral hemorrhage.

She was in intensive care for 12 days and barely survived. “Thank God she survived everything,” said Steinmann. She has little memory of the actual crime.

The accused and the woman met in a restaurant, Steinmann said. The relationship only lasted two months. The man, who has lived in Germany since 2000, had previously had numerous other relationships that ended traumatically for the women. The summonses of the court to question witnesses had caused them to be alarmed and horrified, and some were mentally unable to testify at the trial.

Many of the former partners still have to seek therapeutic help today. They feel ashamed to have put up with all this. “They were afraid of revelation that the accused would reappear after being taken into police custody,” Steinmann said.

Hamburg: Man suffers from schizophrenic delusions

The 41-year-old always pretended to be normal, but then had schizophrenic attacks with delusions and, in particular, jealousy. According to a witness, he saw rivals who didn’t even exist. On the night of the crime, he allowed the daughter of his last partner to sit on a chair in the kitchen. He explained to the twelve-year-old that her mother was addicted to drugs and alcohol and that she was seeing other men.

The 41-year-old himself has an alcohol and drug problem, is unemployed and has no social ties, said the presiding judge. He always lived in his partner’s apartments. After outbreaks of violence and separations, he started a new relationship – “a vicious circle,” Steinmann explained, adding: “The expert called this lifestyle parasitic.”

The consequences for his last partner and her daughter are particularly dramatic: there was a break between the child and the mother. The co-plaintiff lost her apartment, the daughter lives in a supervised facility. Steinmann appreciated the child’s behavior on the night of the crime. It was very important that she went to school in the morning and confided in the teachers. The defendant’s potential for violence had finally become visible.

The 41-year-old is extremely dangerous, his illness has solidified over the years. The risk of repetition is palpable. The accommodation in a closed facility is the only chance for him to get back on his feet. He needs medication and talks. The treatment will take a long time. “Nobody has to fear that the accused will be released and be back in front of the door,” Steinmann assured. (dpa/mp)
