The man rang the bell at a house near Dirk De fauw’s home on Wednesday evening around 10 p.m. The 25-year-old Bruges resident asked for the mayor’s address. The local residents did not trust the case and alerted the police.
A little later, the local police of Bruges were able to arrest the suspect in the driveway of the mayor’s home. When he was arrested, the young man had a knife in his hands. Initial findings showed that the suspect had already sent several threatening emails to the mayor in recent months.
The suspect will soon be brought before the investigating judge for unlawful carrying of weapons and assault
Previous attack
The mayor of Bruges, who is also a lawyer, was the victim of an assassination attempt on June 20, 2020. A man in his thirties from Torhout had an appointment that morning with De fauw, who was his administrator. When he arrived, he stabbed De Fauw in the neck with a potato knife. The mayor then had to be treated in hospital. The perpetrator was ultimately interned for those crimes.
