Man with 54 Prior Arrests Escapes Police Custody at NYC Hospital

A 36-year-old man with a record of 54 arrests escaped from police custody yesterday at Mt. Sinai West Hospital in Midtown Manhattan (NYC).

The fugitive, identified as Darryl Stevenshad been arrested on charges of petty theft He was taken to the hospital Saturday afternoon and fled yesterday shortly before 1 a.m. About 12 hours later he went by himself to a police station in Midtown, he reported. New York Post.

According to the NYPD, the suspect had fled eastbound on West 59th Street. It was not immediately clear why Stevens was in the hospital. The incident is “under internal review,” an NYPD spokesperson said.

This year there have been several similar cases of escaped prisoners in New York. In September, after spending more than a month on the run, Yenchun Chen, who received the nickname “Spider Man” after his almost filmic escape through the window of a hospital in Manhattan, was caught.

At the end of July, a woman escaped security at a federal police station in Queens by fleeing through a window. A month earlier, Anthony Ayala, a 16-year-old teenager who was detained at an NYPD precinct on Staten Island, apparently disappeared by fleeing through a bathroom window.

In August 2022, Eduardo Lacen (23), a young suspect in attempted murder, escaped from an NYPD station in the Bronx after pushing a detective, NYPD sources said.

All charges are mere accusations and those charged are presumed innocent until proven guilty in court.
