Jakarta –
A 76-year-old man believed to be the head of the world’s largest family has died in the Indian state of Mizoram.
Ziona Chana, the leader of a religious sect that practices polygamy, breathed her last Sunday (13/06). He is survived by 38 wives, 89 children, and 36 grandchildren.
The news was confirmed by Mizoram’s chief minister, Zoramthanga, who offered his condolences on Twitter “with a heavy heart”.
Chana is reported to have diabetes and hypertension.
Doctors told PTI news agency that Chana’s condition was deteriorating at his home in the village of Baktawng Tlangnuam. He was rushed to hospital on Sunday afternoon, where he was pronounced dead.
It’s hard to say that Chana is indeed the head of the largest family in the world because there are some other people claim the title.
It’s also hard to say exactly how big Chana’s family is. At least one report claims he has 39 wives, 94 children, 33 grandchildren and one great-grandson, bringing the total to 181.
Although various local news reports say Chana holds the “world record” due to her large family, it is not clear which world record is meant. The family is also reported to have appeared twice on the popular television show Ripley’s Believe it or Not.
But world record or not, Chana and his family have become something of a local sensation, drawing tourists to their village in northeast India.

And Chana’s interesting life is often become a news topic.
The extended family lives together in a four-story house called “Chuuar Than Run” or the New Generation House, and has 100 rooms. His wives live in a large room near Chana’s private room, according to local media.
The gedongan house is a popular tourist spot in the state of Mizoram, with people from all over the world coming there to take a peek at the unique family lifestyle.
According to Reuters news agency, Chana was born in 1945. He met his eldest wife, who is three years his senior, when he was 17.

The family belongs to a Christian sect – the Chana Pawl – which has about 2000 followers. They all live around Chana’s house in Baktawng Tlangnuam, about 55 kilometers from Mizoram’s capital, Aizawl.
The sect, which allows polygamy for men, was founded by Chana’s grandfather in 1942.
