The German truck and bus manufacturer MAN announced on Friday that it would lose up to 9,500 jobs, or a quarter of the total, due to the need to restructure due to the negative effects of the coronavirus pandemic.
The company says it wants to save 1.8 billion euros a year.
The plan also envisages that two plants in Germany and one in Austria could be closed.
MAN had an operating loss of € 423 million in the first six months of this year.
MAN is part of the truck production unit Traton of the German car company Volkswagen.
Traton also owns Swedish truck manufacturer Scania, which announced 5,000 job losses in June.
