Man who supplied Russia with microchips arrested: “It can be used for weapons”

FIOD arrested a 55-year-old man from the east of the Netherlands on suspicion of violating the sanctions law. “It is suspected that the man, in violation of trade restrictions, following the sanctions, would have supplied Russia with goods that could also be used for military purposes”, writes the FIOD.

The FIOD reports that it suspects, among other things, that the suspect has provided microchips to companies / entities in Russia. “These microchips can also be used for weapons production. It is known that the Russian arms industry is currently struggling with a severe shortage of these microchips.”

Bypassing penalties

The man from the east of the country would have probably made the deliveries as if the chips were going to a destination other than Russia. “In order to circumvent the sanctions imposed. The FIOD intervened to stop these deliveries and to conduct further investigations into the possible criminal acts of the suspect”.

What is the Sanctions Act?

Since the outbreak of the war between Russia and Ukraine, additional sanctions, including financial sanctions, have been declared against Russia and Belarus. Restrictions have also been imposed on the supply of goods to Russia. The violation of the sanctioning rules is punished on the basis of art Sanctions Act and the Law on Economic Crimes.

The FIOD tracks people and entities that seek to evade these sanctions or who fail to comply with the sanctions. The FIOD does not have the task of tracing the sanctioned persons or their assets and freezing their assets.
