The man who shot 11 people in a synagogue in Pittsburgh in 2018 has been sentenced to death. The demand came four years ago and the jury has now unanimously decided that the man will receive the death penalty. It is the first time since Biden has been president that someone has been sentenced to death by a federal jury.

In October of that year, the attacker, Robert Bowers, opened fire at the prayer house in the state of Pennsylvania during the Sabbath service while shouting anti-Semitic slogans. The man was arrested after a shootout with police. It was the deadliest attack ever on Jews in the United States.

Prosecutors emphasized the anti-Semitic nature of the attack and the lack of remorse Bowers showed throughout the trial. Before the terrorist attack, he regularly spread anti-Semitic texts on social media. His lawyer cited psychological disorders, including schizophrenia, as an explanation for the attack.

He will be formally sentenced on Thursday by the judge, who will follow the jury’s verdict. It is not yet known when the death penalty will be carried out. Bowers can still appeal.
