The man who killed 23 people at a supermarket in the US state of Texas four years ago was sentenced to 90 life terms on Friday. 22 people were also injured in the shooting.
The 24-year-old gunman confessed to having racist motives for the attack in 2019. Just before the shooting in the city of El Paso, he posted a manifesto on the site 8chan. In it, he stated that the attack was mainly aimed at Mexicans.
A federal judge in El Paso sentenced the man to 90 life terms on Friday. That sentence is part of a plea deal. The shooter pleaded guilty to avoid the death penalty.
The man is also being prosecuted by justice in the state of Texas. The public prosecutor in that case is betting on the death penalty, he says to the newspaper El Paso Times.

‘Special place in hell for people like you’
The verdict followed two days of testimonies from people injured in the attack and relatives of those killed. “I hate you so much. There’s a special place in hell for people like you,” said one survivor, who was 12 years old when her soccer coach was killed and her father injured in the attack.
The gunman would have driven more than ten hours to the border town to open fire there. His family has told American media that the man “never said a word about his aversion to immigrants”.
Hours after the mass shooting in El Paso, another man opened fire in an entertainment district in the US state of Ohio. Nine people were killed and 27 injured.
That number could have increased significantly. But officers managed to take out the man, who was wearing bulletproof clothing and had extra ammunition in his pocket, within thirty seconds.
