Man who escaped arrested and sent postcard to Belgian prison | NOW

A man who escaped from prison in Turnhout, Flanders, along with four other detainees last December, was arrested in the Belgian province of Limburg on Thursday evening, the Belgian Federal Police. In January, the man sent another postcard to the prison management claiming to be in Thailand.

It’s about Oualid Sekkaki. He escaped with four other inmates on the evening of December 19 last year by climbing the prison wall during an evening walk. Then they took off with a getaway car.

Three men were arrested that same evening and at the beginning of January a 38-year-old Dutchman was also arrested again in Nijmegen. The Dutchman was found hiding in the attic of a house.

Sekkaki was the last fugitive. There was no trace of him until at the end of January he sent a postcard to the prison management with the text “Greetings from Thailand”. He also returned his prison badge.

The Antwerp prosecutor’s office immediately started an investigation after his escape. After intensive investigation, he was arrested on Thursday evening just after 7 p.m. in Lummen in the Belgian province of Limburg. He is temporarily transferred to the prison in Hasselt.
