Aidan Horan (39) of Church Road, East Wall, in Dublin has been sentenced to nine months in jail for twice assaulting his wife in 2019, causing her to require surgery on a finger. The Central Criminal Court heard that the couple had a “tempestuous” relationship after getting married in 2018. The first incident followed a night out celebrating New Year’s Eve when Horan became “jealous and angry” about his wife’s contact with others. He struck her multiple times, and she later ran from the house and sought help. Horan was convicted following a trial and in total struck his wife a number of times over two separate occasions. The woman’s victim impact statement described the incidents as having “destroyed her confidence”. Mr Justice Paul Burns noted that violence in the context of domestic violence has a significantly greater impact on a person than violence committed by a stranger, and sentenced Horan to 12 months in jail but suspended the final three months on strict conditions.
