A 25-year-old man wanted in the case of aggravated assault was killed yesterday by NYPD officers in the Chelsea neighborhood of Manhattan.
The unidentified young man was wanted for allegedly attacking a warehouse worker with a glass jar in Chelsea on April 7.
The shooting happened yesterday near 7th Avenue and 24th West around 2 pm Authorities said, when members of a federal task force and the NYPD tried to arrest the young man, he went to the MaximEyes store. The officers gave chase and that’s when the suspect pulled out a .40 caliber handgun.
The officers then fired their weapons, hitting the man several times in the body, he said. ABC News. “I heard gunshots and the man was on the ground fighting with the police,” said a witness named Luis. The young man was taken to Bellevue Hospital in critical condition and pronounced dead.
A man who captured video of the chaos said the scene looked like something out of a TV crime show. “Seeing something like this live and in person is disturbing, “Every minute something happens in the city,” said witness Randy Moreno.
A 26-year-old man who was with the suspect was taken to the police station for questioning.. One officer suffered a small cut on his head during the fight before the shooting.
The case was still under investigation by the State Prosecutor’s Office, as happens when someone dies during an operation or in police custody.
In a similar case, in the middle of April an elderly knife-wielding man was shot and killed by NYPD officers on a street in Queens in an alleged fight with a woman early this morning.
