Manchester United held on to a disappointing 0-0 draw against Southampton at Old Trafford.
Manchester United came out in a 4-1-4-1 formation. Boot Behorst played as one top. Marcus Rashford, Bruno Fernandez, Jadon Sancho and Anthony were positioned in the second line. Casemiro kept it alone.
From left, Luke Shaw, Lisandro Martinez, Rafael Baran and Aaron Wan-Bissaka formed the defensive line. In goal was David de Gea. The visiting team, Southampton, came out with a 4-2-3-1 formation. Che Adams was at the forefront. Kamaldine Sulemana, Carlos Alcaras and Theo Walcott led the attack in the second line. Romeo Labia and James Ward-Prowse formed the midfield.
From left, Romain Perau, Armel Belakochaf, Jan Bednarek and Kyle Walker-Peters made up the back four. The goalkeeper’s gloves were worn by Gavin Bajunu.
Manchester United tried to counterattack. In the 26th minute of the first half, Anthony, who received a pass from the side, gave the ball to Bruno, who rushed in, and Bruno immediately tried to shoot, but it flew high. Behorst’s header in the 31st minute was too weak.
In the 32nd minute of the first half, it was decided that Casemiro’s attempted tackle was excessive, and at the end of the video review (VAR), a red card rather than a yellow card was given.
Manchester United, who had withstood the opponent’s counterattack, unfortunately missed their chance to score in the 12th minute of the second half. Fernandez’s right-footed shot from the left side of the arc circle bounced off the right goalpost after the opposing goalkeeper barely missed it. Two minutes later, Southampton also created a similar situation. Walker Peters fired a powerful left-footed shot from the right side of the penalty box, but it hit the left post.
Manchester United was hit with sad news at the last minute. Garnacho, who was put in as a substitute, was caught in a deep tackle and was even injured. Eventually replaced by Fred. The match ended with neither team scoring.
