NEW YORK – A 22-year-old man suffered severe lacerations to his legs and lower stomach when a tire exploded on an NJ Transit bus at the Port Authority station, shattering glass in the door area, according to sources familiar with the event.
The man was seen with blood on the ground after the incident after 6pm on Wednesday. He also had a cut on his head. Sources said he was waiting for a bus when one of the rear tires burst. It is not clear what caused the accident.
No update on the man’s condition was available Thursday.
A second person suffered a small cut to his hand and refused medical treatment at the scene.
NJ Transit confirmed the incident in a statement. He described the man’s injuries as non-life threatening. The bus was about to leave for the Broadway bus terminal in Paterson when it happened.
Earlier this week, a crash involving an NJ Transit train killed a woman and injured nearly two dozen people in southern New Jersey.
