An American man served 23 years for a murder he did not commit. This was reported by hawaiinewsnow.com, quoted by “24 Chasa”.
In 2000, Albert Ian Schweitzer was sentenced to 130 years in prison for the rape and murder of 23-year-old Dana Ireland.
Under state law, he could receive $50,000 for each year he spends in prison, but that would take more than a judge to overturn his sentence.
Meanwhile, the search for Dana Ireland’s real killer is now underway. Police and the Hawaii County District Attorney’s Office said they are awaiting results of DNA analysis of a sample from the scene of the 1991 Puna murder.
State Sen. Carl Rhodes has said he is willing to revise the state law — which he helped pass years ago — to make sure wrongfully imprisoned people receive compensation.
“There’s a provision for that. If the pardoned person says he’s actually innocent, he can ask the governor to pardon him,” Rhodes said.
