Man shot by police after threatening community with scissors in New York

NEW YORK — A 38-year-old man was shot and wounded by police officers Friday morning after allegedly threatening a community with scissors while in uniform, authorities said.

The emergency call to 9-1-1 was registered at 8:40 in the morning and according to the police the individual was combative even after being shot. The event occurred in the area of 962 Washington Avenue and the man, who apparently suffered from a mental disorder, was transported to the hospital in stable condition, the uniformed officer said initially.

Police Chief of Patrol John Chell indicated that if it had not been for the quick action of officers from Precinct 42, the suspect would possibly have injured at least one person. He has a history of 4 arrests and other incidents with the authorities for mental disorders, he indicated.

The police, who reviewed the events recorded by body cameras of the agents involved, ensure their actions were justified and protected lives.

The suspect is in the hospital.

The case remains under investigation.
