In the city of Allen in the US state of Texas on Saturday, May 6, there was a shooting at the Allen Premium Outlets shopping center. Eight people died and at least seven were injured in the incident, police said.
The assailant, who authorities believe acted alone, was shot and killed by a police officer who was on the scene, Allen Police Chief Brian Harvey told a news conference.
The city’s fire chief, Jonathan Boyd, speaking at the same press conference, said his department had taken at least nine victims with gunshot wounds to local hospitals. Two of them later died.
According to Medical City Healthcare, which operates 16 hospitals in the area, trauma units received wounded “between the ages of 5 and 61.” The condition of the victims was not specified.
Texas Governor Greg Abbott ordered all necessary assistance to be provided to local authorities, calling the incident “a monstrous tragedy.” “Offered the full support of the State of Texas to local authorities to promptly provide needed assistance and resources,” the governor said in a statement on his website.
US President Joe Biden “has been informed of the shooting,” a White House spokesman told reporters.
