Man Sets Himself on Fire in Montauban: Tragic Suicide Attempt Amidst Court-imposed Restraining Order

At the end of the day, Saturday July 29, a man who was forbidden to approach his ex-companion set himself on fire, in front of her home. The latter had just activated her serious danger phone, used to enforce distancing measures.

A 49-year-old man set himself on fire on Saturday in Montauban near the home of his ex-girlfriend, who had just activated his phone in serious danger, AFP learned from the prosecution on Sunday.

The man was forbidden to approach his ex-girlfriend. According to a police source, he doused himself with gasoline in the street before setting the fire when he saw the police arriving.

Alerted by the police, the firefighters intervened around 6:30 p.m. The man, seriously burned, was transported alive to a hospital in Toulouse. An investigation has been opened for “establish the circumstances” of this suicide attempt and entrusted to the Montauban police station, said the prosecution.

Serious danger telephones are cell phones entrusted to victims of rape or domestic violence following a court decision. They have a “shortcut” key allowing, in case of danger, to reach a remote assistance service, which then requests the intervention of the police. Nearly 3,500 are active in France.
