Man sentenced to prison for attacking victim at Fameck market with Swiss Army weapon

His girlfriend dropped him off at the market. He hid between the cars. He approached the victim and pulled out a sharp weapon, Swiss Army type, in the middle of the Fameck market, Saturday May 27, in front of street vendors and passers-by. City CCTV captured the scene. The defendant confirms the facts in front of the Thionville Criminal Court. He spent part of the holiday weekend in pre-trial detention. He was tried on Tuesday in immediate appearance.

“I didn’t want to hurt him, I just wanted to leave a mark,” explains the defendant at the helm. A dispute opposes him to his longtime victim apparently. He explains that his opponent left a scar behind his head. He wanted to hit her back. The goal is reached. The man he injured has several superficial wounds on his face, one on his hand and bruises. However, no day of incapacity for work was prescribed for him by the medical examiner who examined him.

“I tried to do it discreetly”

The victim says she was first attacked in the back. She turned around. The blows rang out. His wounds bear witness to gestures of defence. She says she recognized her attacker. The victim denounces precedents, she has already filed a complaint against him for attempted kidnappings. “I am still presumed innocent,” pleads the defendant.

His criminal record has fifteen old mentions including three for violence. “You judge me on my past”, regrets the person concerned. It minimizes the attack on the market. “I stayed around, I tried to do it discreetly. The defendant admits that he went too far on Saturday morning. “The day before, I was out, I had drunk too much,” he continues. He also apologizes for hitting a trader who tried to interfere.

“Monsieur came to settle his accounts in the open market and he made a collateral victim”, reframes the deputy prosecutor Elodie Seyller. The court follows his requisitions and sentences Helal Tabet * to 24 months in prison, including 10 months accompanied by a two-year suspended probation. During this period, he will have to prove that he has a job, compensate the victim and stay away from her. He will also be prohibited from possessing a weapon for 5 years and from appearing in Fameck for three years. The defendant is being held in custody.

*The names of the defendants are communicated when the sentence exceeds one year in prison.
