New York, April 27. The Manhattan Prosecutor’s Office, in New York, reported Thursday that Douglas Young, found guilty last March for the murder of a Mexican food delivery man for stealing his electric bicycle, was sentenced to serve 41 years in prison to life in prison.
Young was facing a trial for murder, robbery and criminal possession of a weapon for the death on March 29, 2021 of Francisco Villalba, who delivered food for various telephone applications.
The now convicted shot the “deliverist” in the torso, as they are known in New York, for resisting the attempted theft of his vehicle when he was crossing a basketball court in Harlem’s Latin Quarter after finishing his shift.
Villalba was found unconscious and transferred to a hospital, where his death was certified.
Young, 40, immediately left the scene but was identified shortly after through surveillance video from multiple locations, the prosecutor’s office added in a statement.
Villalba’s bicycle was found shortly after on a neighborhood street.
“Francisco Villalba worked hard to support his family in Mexico and dreamed of buying a house. That dream was cut short when he was shot and killed while doing his job,” said Manhattan District Attorney Alvin Bragg.
Several food delivery drivers have been assaulted or killed in New York in recent years after falling victim to attackers who wanted to steal their bikes and money.
Villalba, who was 39 years old, worked for a decade in restaurants to help support his father in Mexico, but in the pandemic he lost his job, so he had joined the group of food delivery men who work for applications and among others. which are abundant with Latino workers. EFE
