Myles Sanderson died in police custody from a drug overdose, an inquiry heard

Recent revelations at a coroner’s inquest shed new light on the horrific stabbing spree that took place in Canada in 2022, revealing the final words of the assailant while in custody.

Myles Sanderson, responsible for the stabbing spree, reportedly told arresting officers, “You guys should have shot me, man,” in a state of distress. He followed it up with an expletive and proclaimed, “I’m ready to die now,” according to Canadian media.

The inquest disclosed that Sanderson’s cause of death was an acute cocaine overdose, which further complicates the already shocking case.

Motive and Timeline of Deadly Attacks

The stabbing spree occurred during Canada’s Labour Day weekend on September 4, 2022, in the province of Saskatchewan. Sanderson’s victims included individuals from the James Smith Cree Nation, an indigenous community, as well as residents of the nearby community of Weldon. A total of seventeen people were injured during the rampage, with ten fatalities, including the assailant’s own brother, Damien Sanderson.

The motive behind the mass killings remains uncertain, as police reports suggest that the assailant, along with his brother, engaged in a series of criminal activities such as drinking, drug dealing, and car theft before the spree commenced. Damien, the first victim, was followed by Myles’ second victim, Robert Sanderson.

Over the course of a few hours, Sanderson continued his violent spree by traveling on foot and using stolen vehicles to break into numerous homes in the community. Multiple victims tragically lost their lives, while others were injured during the attacks.

Police Actions and Medical Attention

After a three-day manhunt, police apprehended Sanderson, who was driving a stolen truck at high speeds. The law enforcement officers executed a tactful arrest that ended with the suspect being forced into a ditch on the side of the motorway.

During the arrest, it became apparent that Sanderson required immediate medical attention. Paramedics arrived at the scene promptly, and the suspect was transported to a hospital within an hour. Unfortunately, Sanderson was declared dead shortly after arriving at the medical facility.

The Saskatoon StarPhoenix reported that Detective Sergeant Ken Kane testified during the inquest that there was no evidence supporting the notion that police action “caused or contributed” to Sanderson’s death.

Background of the Perpetrator

Sanderson, who had a criminal record comprising 59 prior convictions, was on parole when the stabbing spree took place. He had been released from his four-year sentence in February 2022. The public inquiry held earlier this year shed light on Sanderson’s personal grievances, which seemed to have motivated some of his victims, while others were unfortunate casualties.
