A man pleaded guilty Wednesday to murdering stab wounds his wife of Dominican origin during an argument while they were watched by the victim’s daughter in her apartment in Jackson Heights, Queens, New York.
It is expected that Carmelo Mendoza44 years old, be sentenced to 18 years to life in prison in the July 3, 2020 death of Yaqueline Collado, 45, on 34th Road, Queens District Attorney Melinda Katz said.
Collado, owner of a beauty salon in Elmhurst, received more than 27 stab wounds to the chest, neck and torso, according to international media.
The prosecutor explained that on the morning of July 3, Collado and Mendoza were discussing when the victim’s 19-year-old daughter tried to intervene as the man repeatedly stabbed his mother in the chest, neck and torso. The young woman threw several objects and pushed the man in attempts to save her mother, but the individual continued to hurt the woman, until she asked him to leave her in her last impulse to protect her.
The young woman went out into the hallway and began to knock on the neighbors’ doors for help and called the police and her boyfriend. Upon arrival, authorities found Mendoza lying on top of the victim who was lying in a pool of blood on the floor with a kitchen knife nearby. The attacker stabbed himself several times in the abdomen.according to the local media report.
In February, the Dominican César Santana was charged as the suspect in killing his ex-partner light hernandeza teacher also of Dominican origin whose body was found in a shallow grave in Kearny, New Jersey.
