Man Places Fake Bomb at Hospital Entrance in Emmen as Cry for Attention

A 41-year-old man has placed a fake bomb at the entrance to the hospital in Emmen as a cry for attention. The Emmen resident has been very ill and underwent major operations at Treant years ago.

The former cancer patient believes that mistakes were made during his long stay in the hospital. “I wanted to draw attention to my complaints again,” he said in the court in Assen on Friday afternoon. “Very impulsively I gathered things together and put them in a bag.”

He put a broken basketball with bottles and cables stuck to it in a Jumbo bag. On the night of August 19 last year, he placed the bag at the entrance to the hospital.

Surveillance cameras

A security guard called the police. He seriously took into account that it contained an explosive. The entrance to the hospital was cordoned off and fire and ambulance services arrived on site. The Explosive Investigation Service was also deployed to investigate the suspicious package.

When it was safe, the police found that the bag was full of notes with texts such as: ‘Innocently stabbed by doctors’, ‘Reported to IC Emmen’ and ‘Cover up’. The Emmen resident was recognized based on images from surveillance cameras. He was detained for a few days.

The consequences of operations are immense

At the hearing it became clear that the man almost died in 2017 after being operated on for colon cancer. A large part of his intestine had to be removed. Later, his bladder and prostate were removed. The Emmen resident first spent a long time in the ICU in Emmen and was then transferred to the UMCG.

The consequences of the operations are immense. The man has two stomas and only one functioning kidney.

He filed complaints with the hospital because he believed that items had been left in his body during the operations. After investigation, the complaints were declared unfounded. There are also no indications at all that errors were actually made. The man was convinced of this for a long time. He still feels that injustice has been done to him.

The Emmen resident is now being treated by the Mental Health Service. According to his lawyer Genevive Compagner, he has been diagnosed with Post Intensive Care Syndrome (PICS). This consists of physical, mental and psychological complaints and a reduced quality of life. “He is a man who has been through too much and has therefore ended up in a negative spiral,” said the lawyer.

Warning

The public prosecutor said it is certain that his action had very serious consequences. “It is logical that the bag has been classified as potentially explosive. He took the risk that employees and patients would become afraid because a bomb could possibly go off.” The officer says it is positive that there now seems to be more stability in his life and that assistance has started. The officer believes that a three-month suspended prison sentence is sufficient given the circumstances.

The court immediately ruled. The man was found guilty of threatening. “This goes further than just a threatening letter.” The court also believes that a suspended sentence, as a warning, is sufficient given the man’s psychological condition. He was sentenced to one month in prison, suspended for three years.

The Emmen resident reacted with relief. “I am not going to disappoint you,” he said in his last word.
