A passenger was arrested at an Australian airport on Thursday after exiting a parked plane through an emergency exit, walking along the wing and climbing down an engine onto the runway, authorities said.
The incident occurred on Jetstar flight JQ507, which had landed at Melbourne Airport from Sydney and was parked at the terminal gate. According to authorities, the man used an emergency exit on the right side of the plane to leave the aircraft.
When the door was opened, an emergency slide was automatically deployed from the rear of the wing to the ground, the airline said in a statement. However, the man chose to walk along the wing and climb down one of the Airbus A320’s engines, an official added.
Audrey Varghese, a passenger on board, said passengers began screaming when the man began behaving erratically shortly before opening the hatch.
“The man was acting quite strange,” Varghese told Melbourne radio 3AW.
“As soon as the plane started to stop, he immediately stood up and headed towards the emergency exit row,” he added.
Federal police officers were alerted by Jetstar staff and arrested the man for “aggressive behaviour and breaching aircraft safety protocols,” police said in a statement.
The man was examined by paramedics and taken to a hospital, where he remained for further evaluation, the report said.
The police investigation is ongoing, and charges are expected to be filed against the passenger later in the day.
According to Melbourne Airport, the man was initially detained by crew and ground staff before being arrested by police.
“Melbourne Airport is proud of the exceptional response of our ground staff, who ensured there was no immediate danger to other passengers or airport staff,” the airport said in a statement.
