A Father’s Day tragedy has claimed a 48-year-old New York man’s life after a tree fell on a pickup truck, state police said.
The car drove by Palisades Interstate Parkway Sunday afternoon near milepost 29.8 in Stony Point when the tree suddenly fell and crushed the truck and several people inside, authorities said.
The impact of the tree completely destroyed the Ford F-150 pickup truck on the east shoulder of the road and overturned the vehicle.
Anthony Apostolico, 48, of Chester, was pronounced dead at the scene.
The truck driver, 20-year-old Vincent Apostolico, was seriously injured in the crash and was taken to Hackensack University Medical Center. A 17-year-old passenger was treated at Westchester Medical Center for leg injuries, according to police.
Police closed the parkway for several hours as crews worked to clear the scene and tow away the truck.
Officials investigating the incident say it was a tragic moment that the tree fell as the vehicle passed, calling it a “one-in-a-million accident.” At that time, gusts of wind were reported in the area, but it did not rain.
State Police continue to investigate the incident.
