Man Loses Arms and Leg After Flea Bite: The Shocking Story of Michael Kohlhof

Jakarta

After one flea bite, a man in Texas lost both arms and part of his leg. How did it happen?

The man is Michael Kohlhof (35), a volunteer, as well as an art lover and part-time pet sitter. Last month, he was rushed to the emergency room after feeling a loss of feeling in his toe.

His family thought that at that time Kohlhof was only experiencing severe flu symptoms. But not long after, Kohlhof experienced septic shock and was immediately rushed to the ICU.

Within 24 hours, Kohlhof was on a ventilator, dialysis, antibiotics, vasopressors, and lots of IV drugs to keep him alive as his organs damaged rapidly.

“At the end of June 20, I was notified to call immediate family to come from all over the country to say goodbye,” said the mother, J’Leene Hardaway, quoted from the New York Post, Monday (24/7/2023).

“They were worried he was brain dead,” said Greg, a brother from Kohlhof who at that time felt his younger brother was in a state of near death.

After 11 days in intensive care, Kohlhof was finally over his critical period and off the ventilator. However, he was not free from the consequences of his worsening physical condition.

According to Hardaway, Kohlhof’s hands and feet developed dry gangrene as a result of vasopressor treatment, one of the many drugs that saved his life.

It is known that the cause of sepsis and the rapid deterioration of Kohlof’s condition was caused by a single flea bite.
