Man Killed in Areca Nut Climbing Competition in Deli Serdang

Race areca nut climbing in the village of Tandam Hulu I, Hamparan Perak District, Deli Serdang, North Sumatra, ended in death. A man named Eka Prasetya (36) was killed by his friend when he was participating in a areca climbing competition.

The unfortunate incident occurred in the village of Tandam Hulu I on Thursday (17/8/2023) at around 17.00 WIB. The victim worked daily as a palm oil worker.

“Initially the victim’s team played climbing areca nut. Then, his friend who was in the top position slumped. There was a victim,” said Head of Binjai Police Unit Ipda Alex Pasaribu to detikSumatra, Thursday (17/8/2023) evening.

After being hit, the victim experienced shortness of breath. Eka was then rushed to the hospital for treatment.

“At that time the victim had shortness of breath and was immediately taken to Ratu Mas Hospital. Arriving at the hospital, the victim was declared dead, it was around 18.00 WIB,” he added.

The areca climbing event initiated by residents and the local government was immediately stopped.

“Earlier we asked the committee, indeed when the incident occurred, the program was immediately stopped. That’s not only for today, but for the next,” he said.
