NEW YORK CITY — A 33-year-old man has been formally indicted for teh murder of a young woman near a Manhattan hotel in October, according to prosecutors.
Jaheem Warren is accused of fatally choking Leslie Torres, 23, outside the Hotel Riu Plaza New York on West 46th Street in Times Square on Oct. 29. Warren was previously charged with second-degree murder, assault, adn strangulation in November, police said.
“Jaheem Warren allegedly stalked a young woman for 25 minutes on the streets of Manhattan before he brutally attacked her, throwing her onto a pile of garbage bags and suffocating her,” said District Attorney Alvin Bragg. “This alleged conduct is abhorrent. People deserve to be safe when walking through Manhattan, and my Office will ensure accountability for those who commit horrific acts of violence.”
Prosecutors allege that Torres left her building on West 45th Street and was followed by Warren for 25 minutes as she walked through Midtown. Outside the hotel, Warren allegedly grabbed Torres from behind, threw her onto a pile of garbage bags, and choked her to death.
Torres was discovered by a passerby and later transported to Mount Sinai West, where she was found to have no brain activity. She remained on a ventilator in the ICU for a week before being pronounced dead on Nov. 4.
The NYPD is still investigating the motive behind the attack. There is no indication that Warren and Torres knew each other prior to the incident.
This case has sparked concern among residents and visitors to Manhattan, highlighting the need for increased safety measures in one of New York City’s busiest neighborhoods.
