Man in his 70s admits to sexually assaulting young girl in his van

A man in his 70s has pleaded guilty to repeatedly sexually assaulting a young girl during trips in his van. The assaults began in 2014 when the victim was just 8 years old and occurred twice a month for two years. The accused has pleaded guilty to eight sample charges at Donegal Circuit Court, but the victim estimates that she suffered much more than that. The man, who is not related to the victim, knew her father through his business. During trips to various places, including Letterkenny, Killybegs, and Enniskillen, the man would kiss the girl with his tongue. The assaults only came to light when the accused visited the girl’s home, and she confided in an aunt who subsequently told the girl’s mother.

The victim, who is now a teenager, read out her own victim impact statement in court. The traumatic incidents had a severe impact on her both mentally and emotionally, leading her to end a relationship due to the flashbacks she suffered. The accused, sitting at the witness stand, apologized to the victim for what he had done. While he attempted to insist that there was no sexual intent, he accepted responsibility for his actions. His barrister acknowledged the serious harm the assaults had caused to the victim and her family.

The accused has no previous convictions and his family relies on him. The Judge John Aylmer has adjourned the case until June during the next sitting of the Circuit Court for final sentencing.

This case is a prime example of the long-standing issue of sexual assault cases within society. Not only did the man inflict severe harm on the victim, but he also violated her trust and the trust of her family. Individuals who commit sexual assault need to understand the severity of their actions and accept responsibility for the harm they have caused.
