Man in His 30s Wielding Weapon in Broad Daylight: Suspect Reverses Statement about Taking Fentanyl

A man in his 30s, surnamed Cho, who is suspected of causing four casualties by wielding a weapon in the middle of Seoul in broad daylight, said during a police investigation that he had “taken fentanyl,” but then reversed his statement.

The Seoul Gwanak Police Station said that Mr. Cho initially stated to the effect that he had “taken fentanyl, a drug substance,” but reversed his statement when a simple reagent test result came out negative.

Regarding this, the police commissioned the National Institute of Scientific Investigation for a precise identification.

On the other hand, regarding the motive of the crime, it was confirmed that Mr. Cho stated to the effect that ″I lived an unhappy life, but I wanted to make others unhappy too″ and ″I committed the crime in anger.

In addition, regarding the reason for choosing Sillim-dong as the place of the crime, he stated, “I have visited several times to drink with friends, so I knew that it was a crowded place and decided.”

Cho, unemployed in his 30s, is accused of killing a man in his 20s and injuring three men in their 30s by wielding a weapon at around 2:07 pm yesterday.

One injured person has been discharged from the hospital, while the other two are still being treated in hospital.

Mr. Cho has a history of being sent 14 times to the juvenile department of the court with three previous convictions.

Mr. Cho lived back and forth between his home in Incheon and his grandmother’s house in Geumcheon-gu, Seoul, and it was investigated that he stopped by his grandmother’s house just before the crime.

The police searched both places yesterday, and are investigating the details of the crime by randomly submitting Cho’s cell phone.

The police are planning to apply for an arrest warrant for Mr. Cho by the end of today.
