At Grootzand in Grembergen, a 63-year-old pedestrian was caught by a car on Friday afternoon around 2 pm when he crossed the pedestrian crossing. The victim was taken to hospital in critical condition.

When the pedestrian, a man from Dendermonde, had almost crossed the road, he was hit by a car driving in the direction of Hamme. The victim was dragged several meters before the vehicle came to a stop.
The 63-year-old man was bleeding profusely and was given the first care on the spot by the mosquito team of AZ Sint-Blasius. He was then taken to hospital in critical condition.
Steenweg closed
The car was driven by a 74-year-old woman from Dendermonde. The cause of the accident must be investigated. The public prosecutor’s office sent a traffic expert to Grootzand to check the circumstances.
The paved road was completely closed to all traffic. A local detour was necessary.
