The Taiwan Consumer Protection Association received a complaint from Mr. Chen. In a joint interview with the media today, Mr. Chen said that he bought two boxes of beef short ribs at the supermarket last night. After going home and frying them, he had a stomachache. Later, he went to the emergency room for diarrhea. He later checked the second box of beef short ribs and found that the meat was smelly. He asked a friend to help him go to the supermarket to exchange the goods. “Unexpectedly, the third box was still smelly.”

The Health Bureau issued a message stating that so far, no other consumers have reported the same situation, and subsequent chain stores will assist consumers with returns and exchanges and customer complaints.

The Health Bureau inspected the supermarket this morning. It was found that the product was sold in original packaging without being cut and packaged. The appearance of the on-site beef packaging was intact and undamaged. The temperature of the cold storage and the storage environment on the shelf complied with the “Code of Good Food Hygiene Practices”.

The Health Bureau pointed out that the consumer purchased “limited time discount” Australian grain-fed boneless beef short ribs (valid date: January 30, 2020). The same item was randomly inspected on site with different batch numbers. No deterioration was found and one piece was randomly inspected. Meat inspection of animal drug residues.

The Health Bureau stated that if subsequent drug residues are found to be inconsistent with regulations, a fine of more than NT$60,000 will be imposed for violation of Article 15 and Article 44 of the Food Safety and Hygiene Management Act; the source of “beef” products is located in other counties. The city will transfer the jurisdiction to the Health Bureau to strengthen food safety and hygiene management according to its powers and responsibilities.

The industry responded through messages that there were no consumer complaints about the meat products on the shelves in the same batch, and the packaging also stated that the color and taste were normal. The way consumers stored the meat after purchase and before consumption may also affect the freshness of the meat. We will further assist consumers. Protect rights and interests and respect consumer complaint channels.

The Taiwan Consumer Protection Association calls on businesses to strictly control the condition of their products, especially the food safety of immediate products, and health authorities must also strengthen inspections; in addition, businesses should compensate consumers three times the product compensation and pay related medical expenses.
