When a patient receives a traditional eye prosthesis, it takes about 6 weeks before the eye is formed and then the patient has to lie on the operating table for another 2 hours before the eye prosthesis fits perfectly in the eye socket. With a 3D-printed eye you only lose half that time and the operation only takes half an hour. “The queues are very long today, partly due to corona. If the 3D-printed eye prosthesis becomes the new normal, we will be able to make the waiting lists a lot shorter,” said Professor Mandeep Sagoo of Moorfields Eye Hospital.
