The man from Bergen made a disturbing discovery when he cut open the sausage he had bought at Coop Obs on the West Bank.
Plastic appeared in the wax basket that was soft and blue.
Geir-Frode Halvorsen contacted BA when he was unsuccessful in getting in touch with Fatland Sandefjord AS, which produces the product for Coop.
– This is a question of quality control. I think a glove has fallen into the machine.
He says he was sickened by the sight.
Following up on the matter
The general manager of Fatland Sandefjord, Per Einar Johansen, did not know about the case when BA made contact.
Neither the manufacturer nor the Coop store had registered messages from Halvorsen in their systems.
Johansen, however, confirms that the Henriettes branded vossa basket belongs to them. He has an explanation for how the plastic ended up in the sausage.
– We wrap meat in blue plastic. When we then remove the plastic from the frozen sausage, it may happen that there is something left in the meat, he says.
Fatland Sandefjord will follow up on the matter.
– We have systems that can capture foreign elements before the products leave the factory. So we have control, but it can happen that something slips through the system like now, he says.
– Strict criteria
Maja Sørlundsengen, senior adviser at the Norwegian Food Safety Authority, says that the quality control at the producers is closely monitored.
– There are strict criteria for obtaining approval for a production company in Norway. All approved production companies have a management system to deal with hazards and unwanted incidents. They have identified which dangers exist around production and assessed these. The Norwegian Food Safety Authority goes through the systems of the production company, and checks that the systems are followed, she says.
She goes on to say that accidents can still happen, even if you have strict routines.
– In a process where something is produced, unforeseen and unwanted things can happen with, for example, production equipment.
Geir-Frode Halvorsen was finally offered to get back the money for the purchase. Fatland Sandefjord apologizes that Halvorsen did not receive a response to his inquiries.
– A mistake was made by our IT department when moving to new servers, but Halvorsen did not contact us by phone about the incident either, says general manager Per Einar Johansen.
