A man who attempted to enter the country illegally by climbing into the landing gear compartment where the plane’s wheels are retracted was found to be in critical condition. It is reported that he survived the flight for more than two hours in oxygen-deprived conditions with temperatures as low as -50 degrees Celsius.
According to foreign media such as AFP on the 29th (local time), a man believed to be in his 20s was found outside an Air Algeria aircraft that departed from Oran, Algeria and landed in Paris, France 2 hours and 30 minutes later. The man was in the landing gear compartment where the aircraft wheels were retracted and was showing severe symptoms of hypothermia, putting his life in danger.
A source said, “A man was discovered during a technical inspection of an aircraft that landed at Paris Orly Airport and was taken to the hospital. He did not have an ID card, so his personal information has not yet been revealed.”
Commercial aircraft typically fly at altitudes of 30,000 to 40,000 feet (9 to 12 km), where temperatures can drop to -50 degrees Celsius. In this environment, if you stayed in the landing gear compartment, which lacks heating or oxygen supply, your chances of survival are very slim. According to statistics from the U.S. Civil Aviation Administration (FAA), from 1947 to 2021, 132 people attempted to stow away landing gear, and 102 of them died, showing a mortality rate of 77%.
Although the probability is extreme, similar cases have continued to occur until recently. Last April, the body of a man was found in the landing gear compartment of an airplane that arrived at Amsterdam Airport in the Netherlands, and in August, two passengers who were hiding in the landing gear compartment of an airplane heading to Bogota, Colombia, died. In 2019, the body of a man in the landing gear compartment fell from the air during flight.
