The man who attacked Nancy Pelosi’s husband has been found guilty of attempted kidnapping and assault of an immediate family member of a government official. Pelosi was Speaker of the US House of Representatives at the time.
David DePape, 43, invaded the Pelosi’s home in San Francisco on October 28 last year. The politician was not at home at the time, but her now 83-year-old husband Paul was. He was attacked with a hammer and suffered a skull fracture and other injuries.
DePape was convicted of two charges: attempted kidnapping of a government official and assaulting an immediate family member of a government official with the intent to retaliate against the official for the performance of her duties.
For this, DePape could get up to fifty years in prison, or life in prison.
He told the court that he wanted to kidnap and interrogate Nancy Pelosi and break her kneecaps with lies. But once in the house he found only Paul. “He was never my target and I am sorry he was hurt,” DePape said. The man, according to evidence, was driven by right-wing conspiracy theories.
Pelosi’s spokesperson also responded after the ruling. The family thanks everyone who expressed support for Paul Pelosi. “Given the ongoing court proceedings, the family will make no further comment,” the spokesperson said.
