Man fined $ 3500 for breaking quarantine for 8 seconds – Executive Digest

Taiwanese authorities imposed a $ 3500 (approximately € 2880) fine on a man who broke the quarantine for eight seconds.

The man, a migrant worker from the Philippines, was serving a period of isolation at a hotel in Kaohsiung, southern Taiwan, when he briefly left his room for the corridor, the city’s health department said. Central News Agency Taiwan official (CNA, in the acronym in English).

The man was caught in the chambers by hotel staff, who contacted the Department of Health, CNA. The department fined him 100,000 Taiwanese dollars – about 3500 dollars or 2880 euros.

Under Taiwan’s quarantine rules, people are not allowed to leave their rooms, regardless of the duration. Those who are doing the isolation period should not think they will not be fined for leaving the hotel room, the Health Department said.

In Kaohsiung alone there are 56 quarantined hotels, with a total of 3000 rooms, according to CNA.

Taiwan imposes a 14-day quarantine for all people arriving in the territory. Since the beginning of the pandemic, the country has diagnosed 716 infections with the new coronavirus, which caused seven deaths, according to the independent count by Johns Hopkins.

The island’s success in combating the disease has been attributed to the rapid response of the authorities, who began in late December to measure the temperature of passengers from Wuhan, the Chinese city where the disease started, having banned their entry from January 21th.
