Man Escapes from Manhattan Hospital Using Towel Rope: Captured Fugitive Turns Out to be an Imposter

A prisoner whom New York police believe they have arrested is actively sought after escaping from a Manhattan hospital using a makeshift rope made from knotted towels.

Taken to Mount Sinai Beth Israel Hospital for a heart problem, Yenchun Chen, 44, pretended to want to take a shower on Wednesday afternoon to demand towels, according to US media reports.

Now, the Steve McQueen of Manhattan had a plan in mind to stage his spectacular escape from the hospital center, from Gramercy Park using the towels to rappel down the hospital building.

The fugitive, who was arrested on July 31 for drug possession, managed to reach the 2nd floor of the building where he landed on the air conditioning unit, before using a ladder to flee in a yellow taxi in heading south of the city.

Law enforcement said Thursday afternoon that the fugitive had been captured in New Jersey, but later realized the man in custody was not actually Chen, as investigators try to unravel this Hollywood-worthy story.
