On October 17, Ilvis Brokāns sat in his yellow 1980 Gigulet, which he had bought just this summer, to cross the whole of Europe and reach Athens, Greece. The goal was one – to experience everything that life has to offer on a budget, but the result was much brighter.
Ilvis has known for a long time that he wanted a retro car in his possession, but he deliberately did not look for a car. Until one working day morning, scrolling through the “Facebook” timeline, he saw that a gigulite, which had been languishing in the garage for 26 years, was being sold for an affordable price. “I think we should drive and take a look. While I was looking at the car, another buyer drove up. At first he seemed normal, but then he changed his tone, started talking jumpily, and I thought – you won’t have a gig, I’ll take it myself!” Ilvis remembers. After a few days, the zhigulis was already standing majestically in the workshop of a well-known mechanic. 11 days of work – and a new technical inspection for the machine, which had not been operated for years, was in the pocket.
“I spent a bright summer with a gigulita. I took people to several events – right here in Rēzekne I was in the town’s festive procession, there was a wedding trip, a bachelorette party. But at the end of the summer I noticed on Facebook that a roof tent was also for sale. We agreed on 360 euros, and I bought the tent. Lucky because that tent is quite rare! When I got the owner’s manual I found out that it was made three years after the car – 1983 – and was specifically designed for old cars. This was a revelation to me, because it seemed that roof tents were something modern That was the moment when I realized – I have a gig, I have a tent, I have to go, there is no other way!”
