Man drowned 11-year-old in snow

A 28-year-old man was sentenced on Thursday to eight years in custody after killing an 11-year-old in Aasiaat in Greenland.

The Danish newspaper BT writes that it was in November last year that he assaulted the girl in a public place in the small town of Aasiaat, which is located on the west coast of Greenland.

He strangled the girl and laid her over him, so that her face was pushed down into the snow and the girl drowned.

Denies murder

The 28-year-old admitted that he caused the girl’s death in court, but he refused to plead guilty to murder, writes BT.

The court, on the other hand, believes that the man must have realized that it was “overwhelmingly probable” that the girl would die as a result of the assault.

The court also believes that it was aggravating that the victim was a child.

Satisfied prosecutor

Prosecutor Christian Halstad says the following to the Danish news agency Ritzau:

– It is a tragic case, especially for the survivors of the 11-year-old girl.

He says he is pleased that the court agreed with the prosecution that what happened was a murder, and not violence resulting in death.

Disagree on the verdict

According to the news agency, there were three judges during the trial, who did not agree on the sentencing.

While one of the judges wanted to sentence him to seven years ‘detention, the other two voted for eight years’ detention.

The prosecution demanded a sentence of ten years’ detention. They are now considering appealing the case.
