A 40-year-old man drove his car into the Vatican at high speed last night. He rammed into a gate and drove into the courtyard of the Apostolic Palace, where he was arrested. According to the Vatican, the man was in a confused state.

The man first tried to enter the Vatican on foot, but guards refused him at the Porta Sant’Anna, one of the side entrances. Then he got into a car and drove at full speed towards the gate.

A member of the Swiss Guard fired at the bumper of the car, but the driver managed to make his way to the San Damaso courtyard of the Apostolic Palace. There he got out and was apprehended. The incident took place around 8 p.m.

According to the Vatican, the confused man did not get close to the residence of Pope Francis. It is on the other side of Vatican City. There are also no reports of injuries. The man is being held in prison in Vatican City.
