A man has died and his friend has been seriously injured during the running of the bulls festival in eastern Spain, bbc.com reports.
A 61-year-old man was gored in the side by a bull’s horn during the running of the bulls in the town of Pobla de Farnals in the Valencia region on Saturday. Although he underwent emergency surgery, the man did not survive and died from his injuries.
His friend, a 63-year-old man, was seriously injured in both legs.
Deaths and injuries at bull-running festivals in Spain are not uncommon – hundreds of such events take place across Spain each year, during which bulls are released through city streets as people run ahead of them.
Animal rights activists have long warned of the dangers to both society and animals, but such events continue to take place as part of the tradition and are very popular.
The running of the bulls season provides a much-needed boost to Valencia’s economy – a study conducted in 2019 shows that the organization of such events has created more than 3,000 jobs and brings in almost 300 million euros annually.
