Chima Williams, a 43-year-old detainee, died yesterday after collapsing while playing basketball on Rikers Island, the largest jail in NYC.
It’s about the first death in the New York City prison system this year, after 9 in 2023, 19 in 2022 and 16 in 2021, stood out Daily News.
The inmate had been playing basketball for about an hour before collapsing at 9:45 a.m. Thursday at Rikers’ Eric M. Taylor Center, Department of Corrections (DOC) officials said.
Sources reported that Williams suffered a cardiac arrest and they gave him anti-overdose medication and performed cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR)but they couldn’t save him. His death has been considered a “natural” cause, pending the forensic result. The fatality will also be reviewed by the D0C and several outside state and city agencies.
Williams He had been arrested on December 23 in Brooklyn on a weapons possession charge, DOC records show, which issued a press release about his death a few hours later. During part of 2023, the Department’s policy was to confirm inmate deaths only if the media requested it.
