NEW YORK – A man died Sunday after he was shot in the chest by an armed suspect while they were inside a moving train in Manhattan, New York City Police said. The attack would have been unprovoked, the authorities clarified.
The shooting occurred on a northbound Q line subway that crossed the Manhattan Bridge around 11:45 am, she said at a news conference.
Witnesses told authorities the suspect was pacing in the last car of the train before pulling out a firearm and shooting a 48-year-old passenger “without provocation.” They had had no previous contact, they said.
Police added that the suspected gunman fled the Q line train after it stopped at the station. Canal Street. Officers were called to the station where they found the victim with a gunshot wound to the torso.
Emergency crews rendered aid and transported the man to Bellevue Hospital, where he later died of his injuries, police said. His identity was being withheld pending family notification.
