The automatic fire alarm system in the pensioner’s house reported a fire in one of the residential units around midnight. At the same time, the professional fire brigade Vienna also received a call: Due to the size of the house, it triggered alarm level 2, as fire brigade spokesman Lukas Schauer told Radio Vienna. “The fire brigade was on site with 16 emergency vehicles,” said Schauer.
Using breathing apparatus, firefighters penetrated the smoky area with an extinguishing line, searched the apartment for the resident and fought the flames. The man could only be rescued dead, the fire was quickly extinguished. “30 residents had to be taken outside by the fire fighters, equipped with escape filter masks,” said Schauer.
The cause of the fire is still unclear for the time being
Then the adjoining apartments were checked. The other residents were able to stay in their residential units. Six pensioners were still being looked after on the spot by the ambulance; nobody had to go to the hospital. The cause of the fire is now being determined by officials from the Vienna State Office of Criminal Investigation.
