Man died after explosion in field in Merksplas (Merksplas)

Merksplas

In Eindepoel in Merksplas, right on the border with Zondereigen (Baarle-Hertog), an explosion occurred on a field on Wednesday night around midnight. A man was first seriously injured and then died of his injuries. He probably tried to burn PVC tiles when something went wrong.

Around midnight there was a huge bang, which shook windows in the neighborhood, but could also be heard for miles away. Local residents in Merksplas noticed fire and alerted the fire brigade. The facts took place in a field behind a pig farm on Eindepoel.

There, a man had dug a large trench of about fifty square meters into the ground and presumably tried to burn a large amount of PVC grids. That material is used in stables. The emergency services suspect he had doused the material with petrol to ignite it.

Due to its location, the fire brigade received reinforcements from their Dutch colleagues.

Blowtorch

The high temperatures ensure that petrol vapors stick low to the ground. When the man made a fire, a blowtorch spread over a large area. He sustained severe burns. He received the first concerns from family and local residents, after which he was taken with the hospital to the burn center in Stuivenberg in Antwerp. But the help could no longer help, the man died from his injuries.
