A man bitten by a stray cat and develops an infection from a mysterious bacterium. Scientists had never encountered this bacterium before.
After being bitten by the cat several times, the man’s immune response was apparent eight hours later. His hands are swollen. At the hospital, his wounds were cleaned and he was given a tetanus shot. Followed by taking antibiotics. But his condition did not improve.
After one day, he returned. His condition was getting worse, his fingers were swollen. Especially the little finger, very big and looks reddish.
Doctors then analyzed samples of microorganisms from the man’s wounds. As a result, they found organisms similar to Streptococcus, a bacterium that has been linked to meningitis, sore throats, bacterial pneumonia, eye redness and other ailments.
But, when the research team tried to figure out the genome of this bacterium, none of the variants matched. As such, it is a form of bacteria that has never been formally documented.
Quoted from Science AlertIt was later discovered that the bacterium belonged to another genus of gram-positive bacteria called Globicatella. Full genome sequencing of the bacterium shows that it differs from other related strains, such as G. sulfidfaciens. The results found that at around 20%, these were ‘different and previously undescribed species’.
Because G. sulfidifaciens is resistant to several common types of antibiotics, it is difficult to eradicate from the body. Fortunately, a new breed discovered in England is responding well.
“This report highlights the role of the cat as a reservoir of undiscovered bacterial species that have potential human pathogens,” the case study authors wrote. This case study has been published in Emerging Infectious Diseases.
