Man Defrauds Pawnbroker with Fake Gold Bars: Three Detained in Montana

A man defrauded a pawnbroker in Montana by telling him pawned gold bars that turned out to be fake. In return, he received the sum of 15 thousand BGN.

They are on the case three men detained from Lom, aged 27, 33 and 34, reported the Regional Directorate of the Ministry of Internal Affairs in Montana.

One walked into a 24-hour pawn shop in the city on Wednesday evening, presenting five bars, each weighing 31.10 grams, as gold.

Shortly after the “deal“the employee doubted the authenticity of the “ingots” and filed a report with the police. In the case, immediate operative-search actions were carried out and three men complicit in the fraud were detained. With a police order, they were detained for 24 hours in order to clarify the case. A pre-trial proceeding was instituted under Article 209 of the Criminal Code.

In the Montana region, there was a boom in fraud in the period 2015-2020. Then annually the fraudsters collected about BGN 300,000 from the victims in the district, as there were separate cases with BGN 30,000 and 40,000 given at once. The most common were phone scams, but there were also those involving the fictitious purchase of pets, air conditioners, bets, etc.
