“We heard a loud bang around 8.30 pm,” says one of the neighbors who rushed out in pajama pants. “The damage turned out to be enormous. The speed at which the driver hit the traffic island must have been much too high. All the trees have been uprooted, the debris is all around and the trailer was catapulted against a lighting pole. ”
The man drove his Audi A6 on the Ieperstraat from Sleihage towards Hooglede. At Akkerstraat he noticed too late a traffic island in the middle of the road and rammed the trees and two cones of light at high speed. He flew over the traffic island and a few dozen meters further on the right side of the road came across a trailer attached to a parked van.
